There is something fitting about returning to CBC Radio, this time on the other side of the microphone.

James Hees recently joined CBC Radio’s Edmonton AM with Tara McCarthy to talk about his memoir, Born to be Mild, and to look back on a life and career that have given him no shortage of material.

A former CBC journalist, James spent years telling other people’s stories for radio and television. In Born to be Mild, he turns that attention on himself, revisiting the unexpected turns, questionable decisions, colourful characters, near misses, successes and failures that have shaped his life.

CBC describes the interview as “Former reporter James Hees looks back at his life with self-deprecating humour in his new book Born to be Mild.”

Rather than presenting a polished version of the past, Born to be Mild finds much of its humour in the things that didn’t go according to plan. James writes with the perspective of someone who has spent a career observing people, combined with a willingness to make himself part of the joke.

The result is a memoir filled with dark humour, sharp wit and unforgettable characters.
